Winning in MLS

An interesting list of stats- and how it relates to the playoffs so far this season…

Over the course of the past 5 seasons in the Major League Soccer regular season, whichever team scores first wins 64% of the time.

85% of the time, that team either wins or ties.

If the home team scores first they go on to win 74% of the time. They win or tie 90% of the time.

Why am I bringing this up? A couple different reasons as I’ve been watching matches during the playoffs.

  1. John Tolkin basically said the Red Bulls gave up when playing Cincinnati at TQL stadium after going down 2-0.

  2. FC Cincinnati came back from behind in the game at Red Bull Arena to advance in PKs.

  3. Sporting Kansas City (an 8 seed) eliminated St. Louis City SC after starting their series on the road and stunning St Louis.

  4. Crew19 and Atlanta have split the home games so far and I’d expect if Crew scores first in the 3rd match, it spiel go in their favor.
(The “Rubber Match” for this series is tonight 11.12.23 at 7 PM)

  5. Real Salt Lake and Houston had a crazy series- at one point it looked like Houston could have the only win in the series and might not advance.

Take into consideration, as hard as it is to win in MLS regular season, it has to be even harder in the playoffs.

This playoff season has to be even more difficult with an international break in the middle.
