Things I’ve Learned from Ted

In a world where cynicism often reigns supreme, "Ted Lasso" emerges as a beacon of positivity and warmth, offering viewers more than just laughter. This Apple TV+ series, centered around an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer/football team, is a treasure trove of wisdom, humor, and heart. As someone who's gleaned much from the show, I feel compelled to share the profound lessons Ted Lasso has imparted, lessons that resonate far beyond the pitch. If you watched this show, you’re bound to know some of the moments where these points where taught. I’m sure some of you have your own that I didn’t include in this list and I would love to read them.

1. Believe in the Impossible

"Believe" is not just a word plastered on a sign in the AFC Richmond locker room; it's a mantra that Ted Lasso lives by. He steps into a world utterly foreign to him, yet his unwavering belief in himself and his team transforms a seemingly insurmountable challenge into a journey of growth and success. This lesson is a powerful reminder that faith in oneself and one's capabilities can turn the tide, even when the odds seem stacked against you.

2. Empathy Over Ego

Ted's approach to coaching and leadership is rooted in empathy. He takes the time to know each player, understanding their fears, hopes, and dreams. This empathy-first approach not only makes him a better coach but also a transformative figure in the lives of those around him. In a world that often prioritizes success and results over individual well-being, Ted teaches us that understanding and caring for others can lead to more profound achievements.

3. The Power of Vulnerability

Vulnerability is often seen as a weakness, especially in the hyper-competitive world of sports. However, Ted Lasso turns this notion on its head. He's not afraid to show his emotions, admit his shortcomings, or seek help. This openness fosters a culture of trust and honesty within the team, proving that vulnerability can be a source of strength and unity.

4. Optimism Is Contagious

Ted's relentless optimism, even in the face of adversity, inspires those around him to see the glass as half full. His positivity is not naive; it's a choice. It's about finding the silver lining, no matter the situation. This perspective is infectious, encouraging others to adopt a more hopeful and positive outlook on life.

5. Success Is More Than Winning

Under Ted's guidance, AFC Richmond learns that success isn't solely measured by wins and losses. It's about growth, camaraderie, and striving to be better each day. This lesson extends beyond sports, reminding us that success in life is also about the journey, the people we meet, and the lives we touch along the way.

6. Change Is an Opportunity, Not a Threat

Ted's arrival at AFC Richmond is met with skepticism and resistance. However, his presence becomes a catalyst for change, challenging the status quo and encouraging everyone to embrace new possibilities. This lesson teaches us to view change not as a threat but as an opportunity for growth and innovation.

7. Be a Goldfish!

Probably my favorite of the things that I’ve learned is when Ted said to Sam “Be a Goldfish”. A goldfish is the happiest animal on earth because it has a 10-second memory. The statement is false (scientific studies debunk the idea), but it does make a good point: There is a ton of value in leaving the past behind and living in the moment. It is silly. But leaving the past in the past is a great way to “Be a Goldfish”

In essence, "Ted Lasso" is more than a show about football; it's a masterclass in leadership, resilience, and humanity. Through laughter and tears, it imparts lessons that are applicable in all walks of life. Whether you're a coach, a leader, or just someone navigating the complexities of life, there's a bit of Ted Lasso in all of us, reminding us to lead with kindness, belief, and a mustache that means business.

Maybe I should do another post about lessons that I learned from Roy Kent?
