LHS Men’s Soccer Kicks off 2022 with Friendly against Beech Grove

Lawrenceburg plays host to Beech Grove in their only controlled scrimmage of 2022 at 10 am on Saturday. (Dick Meador Stadium on the campus of Lawrenceburg High School)

The Lawrenceburg Tigers ended the 2021 season ranked 10th in the final IHSAA coaches poll. Even with that top 10 ranking, if you asked the players from last season about their 2021 season, they would tell you that it was a disappointment because it didn’t include a sectional title. Falling to Batesville 4-2 in sectional play wasn’t the way that the Tigers imagined their 2021 ending.

They have lost graduating senior and leading scorer Asher Gentry, Defender Dominic Tribbe, and outside midfielder Ryan Moorman. Those three, as well as Kolby Sharpshair, played significant minutes in 2021.

The Tigers have fourteen seniors this season. Fourteen Seniors with one goal in mind, making a run at a State Title. All of the returning seniors played substantial minutes in Varsity or JV last season. Single Season school assist leader, and Senior, Jason Cosby returns for the 2022 campaign. Cosby and Senior Goalkeeper Amadeus Sparks both played at the national club level in the last year and look to make significant contributions in 2022.

Other players to keep an eye on in this scrimmage: Striker Pablo Cunningham, Defender/Midfielder AJ Nelson, and Defender Sebastian Gilmour. Gilmour is returning from a late season knee injury and Nelson is returning from a hamstring injury that plagued him during track & field. Nelson’s ability to close down on the ball is second to none on this squad. Carson Scott looks to make the move from keeper to field player in 2022.

In addition to the large number of returning seniors, the Tigers bring in 14 freshman this season. They look to get some significant minutes in JV matches and develop to continue the LHS Tiger Tradition.

About their opponent:
Beech Grove enters this season coming off of a rough 2021 with a 2-10-1 record. Wins over Indianapolis Scecina Memorial and Morristown along with a tie against Monrovia were highlights of the 2021 campaign for the Hornets.

The Hornets already have two matches under their belt in 2022. A four-nil loss to Mooresville and a four-one win over Bloomington North. For Beech Grove to have a successful 2022, they will need to get quality minutes out of their trio of young goalkeepers and their nine seniors.
